Going the extra miles

< Back to listing

Romsey Mill has been chosen to be charity of the year by the churches of the Parish of the Icknield Way Villages. One of their members, Minnie Folland, a local teaching assistant, decided to go to great lengths to show her support and entered her first ever half marathon to help raise funds for Romsey Mill.

Minnie chose the Amsterdam Half Marathon, which took place in October, and coincided with the full Amsterdam Marathon, in which her father and boyfriend (pictured right) were taking part.

Minnie sent us this report of her experience:

“There were 40,000 runners in the city on the day, including those doing the full marathon and other races organised on the day. Therefore it can definitely be said that the city was absolutely buzzing.  We were extremely lucky with the weather, although it was rather chilly, the sun was out and Amsterdam was looking beautiful. I had a fantastic morning supporting my boyfriend and dad complete the full marathon, which was incredibly exciting and inspirational for me.

By 1:30 pm it was my turn to run, a little nerve racking to say the least. Having said this, as soon as the run started I managed to get in the zone and can genuinely say I enjoyed every moment. The amount of support on the course was astounding and to be in such a wonderful city made everything more amazing.

I somehow managed to complete the run with a smile on my face and a feeling of disbelief. I feel very privileged to have run to support such a brilliant local charity, Romsey Mill.

When I went to see the team at Romsey Mill they told me a lot about the amazing projects they are currently working on. I was especially struck by the initiatives for young parents, autistic children and disadvantaged families and young people, that they to do in such a personalised way. And their youth workers going out on to the streets and into schools to meet, engage with and help those who are most in need.

I have been very inspired and amazed by all the brilliant work that does Romsey Mill does, it is such unique charity and it has been a privilege to be able to offer my support in this way.

I would like to say a huge thank you to our very special parish who helped me to raise over £800 to hopefully help as much as we can.”
