A Life Changing Gift: Rebecca and Tracy’s Story

Our Christmas Appeal this year is focusing on the work of Aspire and its positive impact on the lives autistic young people and their families in Cambridgeshire.

Here is the difference that Aspire has made in one young lady's life:

Rebecca is 13 and loves drawing; Harry Potter; history (especially Tudor history); and the singer Ava Max.

She enjoys school but has always found forming friendships a challenge. She sometimes finds it hard to express how she feels, causing her frustration.

She struggles with loud places and finds it tricky to go out without the support of her mum or nanna.

Rebecca started attending an Aspire girls group about 18 months ago.

Rebecca’s mum, Tracy, said:

“Before Aspire Rebecca didn't really have any friends. Since coming to Aspire she has got more confident with talking to others. She is happier to approach people and make friends with others at school. Rebecca is always happier when she comes out of her Aspire club. She is more talkative and full of smiles.”

Rebecca said:,

“I love it, I can do activities that I like. The club helps me with making friends. It’s a place for me to have fun and I love the toasted sandwiches.”

Tracy added:

“Rebecca trying a toasted sandwich is a big deal for us as we have been trying to do this for years! However she still won’t eat them at home as she says they are not the same.

“If she didn’t have the group I would worry about Rebecca’s mental health. Aspire is providing a preventative safety net.

"As a parent of an autistic girl I’ve found there aren't many people that understand our experience.

"Aspire doesn’t just support the child, they support the whole family in lots of ways. It makes a world of difference.

"We aren’t on our own.”
