Christmas Appeal 2021: Bex's Story

A Life Changing Gift: Bex’s Story

Our Christmas Appeal this year is focusing on the work of Aspire and its positive impact on the lives autistic young people and their families in Cambridgeshire.

Here is the difference that Aspire has made in one young lady's life:

Bex has been part of an Aspire youth club for just over 2 years.

Before she started attending Aspire Bex was quite isolated. She had a couple of friends from primary school that she kept in contact with at secondary but didn't see them outside school or communicate much with them. She didn't find it easy to make friends, she was shy of being different and didn't know how to start conversations.

For much of Bex's life her 'friends' have been the children of her mum’s friends rather than friends of her own. There have been very few play dates and parties attended over the years.

During lockdown Bex enjoyed the regular Aspire Zoom calls and online game sessions, she really looked forward to seeing her friends there.

Her mum Hannah says:

“Bex has developed more confidence, she loves to chat with her Aspire friends over WhatsApp and smiles a lot more. She feels less isolated and reassured that she's not alone, there are more people like her around. She now has friends who understand her enthusiasm and interests, they don't judge her or look down on her when she gets excited and starts bouncing around.

Attending Aspire has really helped Bex blossom. Attending the youth club has been a fabulous opportunity for her. We're so grateful to the team and all at Romsey Mill for the difference it has made to our awesome little lady.”

For Bex, Aspire really has been life changing.

She said:

"Aspire has given me more friends. I look forward to coming and spending time with people who understand me and like me for being me."
